Mesothelioma used to be a relatively rare disease. However as we now know the incidence is increasing and will continue to increase for many years to come. Medically there should be UK concensus regarding a treatment plan based on best practice to help treat patients with this condition or help alleviate their symptoms. At AAW/UK we also believe that a specialised 'Care Pathway' or 'Protocol' should be developed and adopted throughout the UK. At the present time we understand that Mesothelioma patients are included in the general Cancer Network system which we feel is not always suited to the specialised needs of such patients. The development of a Mesothelioma / Asbestos disease 'Pathway' would be 'tailor made' to cover the management of the patient from the time of diagnosis, through to any medical interventions that might be suggested such as chemotherapy or surgery. It should cover the whole patient journey. If such a disease specific plan already exists we would like to know about it please. AAW/UK have started developing ideas that could be considered for inclusion into such a pathway. We would like to hear from people who have had first hand experience both negative and positive and whom would like to make suggestions of what they think should be included. We hope that the ideas we collate can be drawn up and presented to the Mesothelioma Interest Group for consideration and possible implementation at UK level. This pathway should be viewed as a 'positive' move towards practical help for those affected by Asbestos related diseases and the families who make the 'journey' alongside them. If you feel that you are able to talk about your experiences please make contact via help@asbestosawarenesswales.org.uk or asbestosawarenesswales@yahoo.co.uk alternatively, you can write with your comments to Mrs. C. Cooke, AAW/UK Treasurer, 26 St. Andrews Road, Penycoedcae, Pontypridd, CF37 1XF. All comments will be treated confidentially and if used or quoted will be anonymised unless advised otherwise. Thank you.
